dynamic figure drawing Mark's process

OK I'm going to be doing a paint over of everyone's character design... looking ahead to your dynamic poses, here are the criteria I'll be looking for in your images, which I've illustrated in the example at the bottom of this post...

1.  GESTURE: the basic flow and dynamism of the pose, the two things you are trying to establish at this stage is cool pose and proportions. Be sure to make sure that in your enthusiasm to create a cool pose that you don't violate the structure and mechanics of the body, bones and joints and hands and feet can only assume certain poses before they "break."

2. VOLUME:  The anatomy of any creature is three dimensional, so you need to figure out the 3 dimensional nature of each component of the creature's anatomy.  The easiest way  to do this is to break down the body into tubes, remember our discussion in class about where your camera is and which parts of the ellipses to draw so that each part of the anatomy is "turning" in the proper direction relative to your camera angle.  Also remember to place your center lines for each part of the body, this helps you understand how the various body parts are turning and twisting relative to the camera

3. ANATOMICAL ACCURACY:  Once you have a nice sense of 3-dimensionality you need to begin to refine the form transforming it from a collection of tubes into a holistic single form.  Check to make sure that nothing in your anatomy is "broken" in other words make sure the joints line up with each other; the shoulder to the elbow to the wrist and the hip to the knee to the ankle etc.  also make sure that the character's clothing is following accurately the contour of the part of the body its "living" on top of.  Also remember not to be afraid to fix things that don't work, if you drew something wrong at previous stages fix it in the latter stages.  Creating a good image can be thought of as simply a process of continually improving your image or in other words continually "fixing" previous mistakes.

  1. So you want us to include all three for all six figures? And not just draw over them?
